SYNTHETIC CHILDREN AND HOLDING BACK THE TIDE OF HUMANITY

It was bound to come to this …”Synthetic Children”. The gay fashion designers, Dolce and Gabanna and the gay rock star  Elton John and his partner have clashed over a supposed slur about the veracity of their children as “natural” or “normal” human- beings.. Elton and his partner , obviously unable to conceive in the traditional way, both being of the male gender, took the scientific route that many heterosexual couples have previously taken and decided to have children ,conceived by the modern artificial , scientific method. There would have been a willing surrogate mother or two involved, possibly. None of this is new ,of course . Many nameless male sperm donors have supplied the seed of life to childless people for years now. Many children do not know who their real father is and many women might have no idea who the father of their child actually is.

I’m sure that ,way back in the mists of time, when mankind was young , humans had no idea how and why children appeared at all. How could they know? They may have gradually figured the process out when they began keeping animals and the concept of the ownership of individuals ,of new-born beasts and  the timeline of their origins, began to make sense. People may have watched creatures mating and somehow worked out the timespan of gestation. In that sense , the notion of “family” may have arrived when they figured that the offspring of a particular man and a particular woman was the result of their  physical “marriage”.How would they put it together that any of this was related to them having sex nine months previously?

When they discovered the cause, offspring,  both human and animal, became a matter of localised , family ownership. Before that realisation , it was probably a free- for -all in the mating stakes.Nobody would have a notion why all these little animals and humans came about.

Many people of all sexes struggle with their fecundity and are unable to have children in the traditional, sexual way , no matter their supposed virility ,and opt for artificial methods because even with their best efforts, they could not conceive. . Bear in mind that  for many years now  cows have been conceived in artfully artificial ways and no-one has yet stooped to calling their offspring in any way “artificial”. You’ll not go into a supermarket or a butchery and be confronted with trays of  “natural steaks” or “synthetic steaks”. The steak is just the same meat , in the end….

So what is this row about “synthetic children” about ? There’ll be those who see humanity’s constant scientific struggle for betterment as a threat to “traditional values” .There are many out there who think “gay blood” is somehow contaminated and that blood transfusion or organ donations are wrong and a threat to civilisation  somehow. They see it as upsetting the “natural order” of things. That’s like saying that if man was meant to fly , he’d have been blessed with feathered wings, of course or that the train should never have been invented.

Dolce and Gabbana said , “We oppose gay adoptions. “The only family is the traditional one.”They were also  also critical of  IVF and surrogate parents: Their line is … “No chemical offspring and rented uterus: life has a natural flow, there are things that should not be changed.””You are born to a mother and a father – or at least that’s how it should be,” Dolce says. “I call children of chemistry, synthetic children. Rented uterus, semen chosen from a catalogue.”The repercussions worldwide of this kind of thinking and this statement in particular are yet to be seen, but already battle-lines are being drawn in that imaginary sand.

I think many people do not realise that the world they live in is so  ever-changing  that learning and knowledge will always bring complicated truths with it .It’s like the idea of  King Canute{Cnut the Great}  attempting to hold back the waves of the sea . It cannot be done .The future will always be a different  place compared to the present and it will always require new ways… and fresh ways of thinking..
